Marcel Perret-Gentil

2023 Recipient of the AALAS Nathan Brewer Lifetime Achievement Award (highest honor given by AALAS in the field of lab animal science). 

Dr. Perret-Gentil is the University Veterinarian at the University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA) and President of PLAVS (Perret-Gentil Lab Animal Veterinary Services). He serves as Attending Veterinarian to nine institutions, including Colossal, the company working on bringing back from extinction animals such as the woolly mammoth, dodo bird, dire wolves, and others. 

Marcel has held 43 consulting positions, including governmental, biotechnology, and higher-education institutions in the U.S. and abroad.  He serves as ad hoc Specialist for AAALAC International (having completed 48 site visits).

  • Recipient of the 2023 Nathan R. Brewer Lifetime Achievement Award. The Nathan R. Brewer Lifetime Achievement Award recognizes an individual for outstanding lifelong contributions to the field of Laboratory Animal Medicine. It is awarded by AALAS (American Association of Laboratory Animal Science) and is the highest honor AALAS bestows on an individual.

    • Co-authored “The Impact of Recent Changes in the Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals on Education, Training, and Competency Assessment.”  ALN 10(3):31-32, 2011.  Announced in the April 2011 issue as the most read article and in July 2011 as one of the top 10 articles of the first half of 2011.‍‍‍

Luis Zorrilla

Mr. Luis Zorrilla is the Assistant Director of the Laboratory Animal Resources Center (LARC) at the University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA). In addition, he is Course Director at Drexel University and professor in the Master of Laboratory Animal Science (MLAS) program where he teaches the Architecture, Engineering and Planning course for Laboratory Animal Facilities. He served in the planning and construction committee of XenoSTART, San Antonio, Texas and for the Universidad Católica del Maule, Chile.  

His academic background includes biological sciences and pedagogy, a fundamental structure for the administration of scientific research programs.  Currently, he is completing a Master of Business Administration which complements fiscal and budget responsibilities, and activities crucial for the administration of research programs in academic institutions.  

As an active member in the field, Mr. Zorrilla has served on the Board of Directors for the American Association for Laboratory Animals (AALAS) and as a member of the committee and instruction at the Institute of Laboratory Animal Management (ILAM), both of which are internationally recognized programs as a source of instruction and preparation for animal research management, and program management and administration.  In addition to presentations and publications, Mr. Zorrilla serves as international advisor on the design, construction and administration of animal research facilities and programs.
